The recent news that a U.K. public relations exec was banned from Soho House for wearing a suit -- in strict violation of the club's casual dress code -- got us thinking about the style rules at some of our favorite New York hotspots. We spoke to several local nightlife managers to find out their sartorial pet peeves.Andy Kelley, General Manager at 1920 Bunker Club Cardinal sin: "For ladies, it's definitely bad sequins (they come in so many forms these days), and those dinky 2-inch heels. For feather extension guys, it's really anything that looks like you are on Jersey Shore, which often means the brands Affliction, Ed Hardy, Christian Audigier or anything with logos, skulls and eagles.Style advice: "In the end, it's all about how you wear it and how you look in it. You could be wearing jeans and a T-shirt. It's how you put it together and how you carry yourself. Unacceptable? Think New Jersey and that will help you determine what not to wear. You never know who is going to be walking through the door at Bunker, but the people who call to ask us if there is a dress code -- those are the ones to watch out for."Jasper Soffer, General Manager at Mulberry Project Cardinal sin: "I would have to say the shorts and sandals combo is a no -- regardless of the temperature."Style advice: "We like our guests to put in some effort. Our doorman likes to see that someone has dressed up to go out, not just worn what they have been walking about in all day."Brian Mazza, Director of Hospitality at Paige Management (The Ainsworth, Pub ONE, AXE Lounge, The Hill) Cardinal sin: "Guys who wear a T-shirt or button-down with some form of graphic, or Feather hair rhinestones. Men should never, ever wear rhinestones or shirts with graphics on them...and if you have them on your jeans then that's a whole other situation!"Style advice: "A vest should never be worn without a jacket. If you do not know how to wear a vest you will look like Peter Pan. The vest should hit at your belt buckle and wrap snugly around your torso. If you wear a vest with a T-shirt, expect to wait in line for a long time! Also if you're going to wear a button-down with jeans, get a trim-fitted shirt, and tuck it in. Shoulder seams should hug your own shoulders. Make sure your sleeves aren't too short or long. When collars look like they are flying away, so will the girls. Invest in a great custom shirt and custom suit. And, shoes are where you cannot screw up. Invest in higher-end brands if you can, such as Ferragamo, Tods, Gucci, Paul Smith, Barker Black; but if you have the right look, it really doesn't matter what brand the shoes are. Make sure to purchase a round front, not a square toe because your outfit will be ruined for the night."Ryan Dusheiko, General Manager at Riff Raff's Cardinal sin:"If you're Hair extensions wearing flip flops with a suit, you're probably in the wrong venue. Also -- capri pants. I don't think they're technically in style anymore, but no one should be rocking capri pants...ever."Style advice: "We live in New York City, where people come specifically because they're looking to express their individuality, so my motto is "if you wear it with confidence and you look good, then we respect it." Of course this cannot go across the board. If you show up wearing a T-shirt with Goofy in a hammock that says 'Just Goofing Around,' black Reebok high tops and white knee-high socks then you won't get in, I can assure you. Then again, that may be because it reminds me of my first day of school in America and getting beat up!"The Mulberry Project
